Slovenia is a mountainous country: the average altitude is 300 m and 38% of its territory is covered by the Alps (Julian Alps to the west, Karavanke in the northwest, and Kamnik-Savinja in the north center region).
The highest peak is Triglav (2864 m). Slovenia has a long mountain hiking background; the first mountaineering association appeared in 1893. The mountain refuges are plentiful and it is not unusual to see families with young children on Slovenian trails in the summer and winter. All Slovenians will say that everyone needs to go up Mount Triglav at least once in his life!
Triglav National Park, but also many other protected natural parks, offer many hiking opportunities. In a small area of about 20 000 km2, Slovenia has almost 10 000 km of marked hiking trails! It is paradise for hikers. One can discover many natural attractions: lakes, waterfalls, rivers, limestone gorges, caves and karst sinkholes …
It is also one of the least polluted territories of Europe. Nature is omnipresent there, Slovenians have adapted to preserve this wild and radiant country, and keep a very natural and clean environment.
About 500 bears live on this small territory! It also is home to species of lynx, wolves, raptors and many other animals.
Among the Slovenian jewels that must not be missed are: the Lake Bled, the gorge of Vintgar, the Bohinj Lake, the Valley of the 7 lakes in the Triglav National Park, the Sotchà (river with incredible purity), the Logar valley in Velika Planina, Tolmin and its gorges, the caves of Škocjan, Piran, the Vipava valley …
Aware of their natural and cultural wealth, the Slovenian offer many lodging opportunities for rural and mountain tourism: many houses and “tourist farms” offer very comfortable nights in a beautiful setting. And of course this sort of hiking goes with local cuisine and beverages that will delight your taste buds after a nice hike on Slovenian trails.
In winter snow cover everything, and beautiful scenery of snow-coated landscapes are perfect for snowshoeing. The winter lodging and tourism quality are also excellent. Hikers, summer like winter, will be amazed!
